Tips for Road Tripping with your dog!

Over pack – When it comes to dogs always over pack! Bring everything that you may need just in case. Bring food, large refillable bottle of water, blanket, favorite toy, leash and food/water bowls. We have portable dishes that stay in the car at all times. Plan for an emergency. Even if you are only going on a short day trip, plan for a longer trip, just in case.

Check the weather along your route – For a longer trip make sure to check the weather on the route you will be taking. This isn’t just for you but for your dog. If you need to stop and have to leave your dog in the car you want to make sure its not going to be too hot or too cold. Extreme weather can harm your pet! Never leave your pet in the car when the temperature is above 69 degrees fahrenheit. If its cold my basic rule of thumb is, if its too cold for you its too cold for your dog!

Stop often – You know your dog better than anyone, so you know when they have to use the bathroom. When we are on the road I try to stop at a rest area and let Basil potty even 2 hours at the least. This may sound like a lot but for us and Basil, who is a smaller dog who drinks plenty of water, this works. If you have a larger dog you may not need to stop so much but I would say its better to be safe than sorry!

Make a comfortable space for your pet – For us we have never crated Basil or Nolan when in the car. They have both been great road trip dogs and are just happy to chill in the back seat. To make Basil comfortable I always bring his favorite blanket. He curls up in it and falls asleep. To keep the car seats protected we use a little weight weighted water proof picnic blanket. Its perfect for keeping the car clean from wet, dirty dog or spilled food or water. It is washable and folds up super small. For those of you that do use a crate in the car make sure to add comforts from home like a pillow or blanket.

Set the child locks on the windows – This sounds funny but it is something that we have learned over the years and it has really come in handy. If we don’t set the child locks on the power windows Basil takes it upon himself to lower the windows in the back seat no matter what the weather outside may be.

These five tip have helped us when traveling with our dog all over the United States by car. If you have any other tips you would like to add make sure to let me know in the comments below. Hope everyone is staying warm!

Basil meets Santa!

Last night was pet photos with Santa at the local mall. We got dressed up and fought the wind, rain and traffic so we could have our first family photo with jolly one himself.

Basil loves places like malls and really any shop that allows dogs, so he was beyond excited. Not only did he get to see Santa but he also got to say “hello” to other dogs and a few adorable babies while in line. Once it was our turn Basil pulled me to Santa, he was ready to go. We adjusted our hair and Basil’s brand new Chilly Dog sweater and took a seat. After that is was just a few squeaks of a dog toy and clicks of the camera and we were done.

All the photos came out great and the one below was the chosen one! We hope you enjoy it as much as we do and if you are in the Carolina’s and still need your own photo with Santa make sure to check out Santa Max at the Carolina Place mall. Also, makes sure to head over to his Facebook and like him there as well!

Happy 15th day until Christmas!

Happy Sunday Funday!

Sunday is my favorite day of the week. It is so relaxing and its football day! So in the spirit of being a little lazy I thought I would share the only two photos that came out from our time in at The Dog Bar last night.

It was the ugly Christmas sweater party and pet food drive. Admission to this Saturday evening pet-fest was a bag of pet food to be donated to Second Harvest. Basil made a few new friends and had a great time running around like a mad man. We had a blast!

Enjoy your Sunday Funday and Go Hawks!

Let it snow, Let it snow! This Boston wants snow!

Its December 6th and we just got Basil’s new Chilly Dog sweater in the mail. Its absolutely perfect and fits him like a dream. It has a cute little hood that keeps his puppy dog ears warm. Now all we need is a little bit of snow!

Currently in the Carolinas we have been experiencing some serious warm temps with the high being 75 degrees today! (Seriously?!) Basil and I are just hoping for some cooler days so he can show the world how cute he is in his new sweater. For now he will just get to look adorable in the house and on Monday when he gets to meet Santa. Check back everyday for your daily BT advent calendar picture and on Tuesday to find out how it went with Santa!

On the 2nd day of December….

December 2nd 2013

On the 2nd day of December Basil gave to thee… The perfect Christmas tree!

December 2nd 2013

On a side note to todays Basil’s Travels advent calendar post, both of these adorable photos were taken at Little Switzerland Frasier Firs in Little Switzerland, NC. In the mountains of North Carolina we found a friendly family tree farm with hundreds of beautiful Frasier firs. It was absolutely perfect and Basil had an amazing time. Trees are reasonably priced and the land & view was worth the trip. If you’re in NC and have yet to pick out your Christmas tree please consider Little Switzerland Frasier Firs for all your tree needs! For those of you on the west coast, let me recommend Keith & Scott tree farm in North Bend, WA. When we are on the west coast this is were we always cut down our tree. They are great, have a lot of different kinds of trees, and are dog & family friendly. Hope everyone is having a get start to their holiday season and make sure to check back here everyday for more BT advent calendar photos!

Basil loves Thanksgiving! Basil loves Family!

We are getting pretty excited for Thanksgiving here in the Myers house. Basil knows that something is different this year because we are usually traveling for Thanksgiving. This year we figured that because we are already out traveling the South we would just stay here and spend this holiday with my mom & dad.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I can’t believe its already that time of year again. We have stocked up on wine and I am planing on making a winter cranberry sangria. My mom is cooking the for the “big show” and that makes everyone in our family super excited.

Cooking Thanksgiving 2012 in a tiny apartment kitchen!

Basil never gets human food (maybe a piece of popcorn here or there or a slice of cheese from my mom when we visit Nana & Papas) so he really couldn’t care less about the meal part of the day, but he just loves being able to spend the whole day with family. We made sure to get a new dog friendly bone for him to enjoy while we stuff our faces. If you do plan on giving your dog a little taste of the table make sure to check out this list to find out what could harm your pooch and have you spending Thanksgiving night in the emergency vet.

Basil & Sebastian keeping warm on Thanksgiving 2012

Family is really important to us and Nate & I are really close to our parents. Maybe that is why Thanksgiving is something we look forward to. For the last week or so on TV and the internet I’ve been seeing that a lot of stores are planing on opening for Black Friday early… like on Thursday! This is not acceptable! I feel bad for all those workers that are being forced to work when they should be spending a nice comfortable day at home with a good meal. I also feel bad for those people that think they have to go stand in line for hours upon hours on Thanksgiving to get a good deal. So, Basil Travels is boycotting shopping on Thanksgiving and will not purchase anything on Nov 28th! We believe in Black Friday and will get up early, on Friday, to fight the crowds and purchase discount goods on the day that its meant to be on; Friday!

In short, Basil, Nate & I wish you the best Thanksgiving ever. Make sure to tell your family and friends you are Thankful for them and love your pets because even though they can’t talk they are thankful for you!

For all of our fans and everyone that reads about Basil’s adventures please know that we are so thankful for you and couldn’t continue Basil’s Travels without your love and support! Thank you!

Christmas in the Southwest!

On December 13 we are headed out on a road trip to Texas. My sister, brother in law and their 4 kidlets are currently living outside San Antonio so this family is going to join them for a not-so white Texas Christmas.

We’ll be on the road from Charlotte, NC to San Antonio, TX and passing through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. We would love to make a few stops along the way and need recommendations from you. Let me know where you want to see Basil go in the comments below. I’ll be posting from the road so you can see what kind of fun we get into.

Also, keep voting for what you want Basil to wear for his meeting with Santa. Multiple votes are encouraged!

Throwback Thursday – San Juan Island, Washington State

Enjoy a few photos from a weekend on “the island”, San Juan Island, back from Thanksgiving 2011 when Basil got to visit with his Great Grandma. Every time we visit Basil becomes island dog and never wants to leave!

You can’t see but the rock Basil is standing on is much larger than it appears, and he became a mountain goat and climbed up all by himself!
