Basil loves Thanksgiving! Basil loves Family!

We are getting pretty excited for Thanksgiving here in the Myers house. Basil knows that something is different this year because we are usually traveling for Thanksgiving. This year we figured that because we are already out traveling the South we would just stay here and spend this holiday with my mom & dad.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I can’t believe its already that time of year again. We have stocked up on wine and I am planing on making a winter cranberry sangria. My mom is cooking the for the “big show” and that makes everyone in our family super excited.

Basil never gets human food (maybe a piece of popcorn here or there or a slice of cheese from my mom when we visit Nana & Papas) so he really couldn’t care less about the meal part of the day, but he just loves being able to spend the whole day with family. We made sure to get a new dog friendly bone for him to enjoy while we stuff our faces. If you do plan on giving your dog a little taste of the table make sure to check out this list to find out what could harm your pooch and have you spending Thanksgiving night in the emergency vet.

Family is really important to us and Nate & I are really close to our parents. Maybe that is why Thanksgiving is something we look forward to. For the last week or so on TV and the internet I’ve been seeing that a lot of stores are planing on opening for Black Friday early… like on Thursday! This is not acceptable! I feel bad for all those workers that are being forced to work when they should be spending a nice comfortable day at home with a good meal. I also feel bad for those people that think they have to go stand in line for hours upon hours on Thanksgiving to get a good deal. So, Basil Travels is boycotting shopping on Thanksgiving and will not purchase anything on Nov 28th! We believe in Black Friday and will get up early, on Friday, to fight the crowds and purchase discount goods on the day that its meant to be on; Friday!

In short, Basil, Nate & I wish you the best Thanksgiving ever. Make sure to tell your family and friends you are Thankful for them and love your pets because even though they can’t talk they are thankful for you!

For all of our fans and everyone that reads about Basil’s adventures please know that we are so thankful for you and couldn’t continue Basil’s Travels without your love and support! Thank you!

Christmas in the Southwest!

On December 13 we are headed out on a road trip to Texas. My sister, brother in law and their 4 kidlets are currently living outside San Antonio so this family is going to join them for a not-so white Texas Christmas.

We’ll be on the road from Charlotte, NC to San Antonio, TX and passing through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. We would love to make a few stops along the way and need recommendations from you. Let me know where you want to see Basil go in the comments below. I’ll be posting from the road so you can see what kind of fun we get into.

Also, keep voting for what you want Basil to wear for his meeting with Santa. Multiple votes are encouraged!

I want the photos to come out great so we can make them our Christmas cards, so he has to look good! I’m going to order him a new Chilly Dog sweater and want Basil’s fans to pick it for him. Take a look at the photos below and then make sure to vote for your favorite.

Jackalope Jack’s – Charlotte, NC

This last Saturday we decided to go out and find a good old fashion hipster brunch. Being true hipsters we know that a hipster brunch has to check off certain boxes to qualify, and traveling in North Carolina I wasn’t sure we would find it… but we did! Jackalope Jack’s in the neighborhood of Elisabeth was just what we were searching for. Hip neighborhood, high marks for brunch on Yelp, beer specials, and a large outdoor dog friendly patio. The only thing lacking was no artisan craft coffee when I sat down. But I can over look that as there was a Starbucks right across the street. No one is perfect!

Once we found a seat on the long, narrow covered patio Basil was happy right away. The waitress brought him a fresh bowl of water and offered him a Milk-bone biscuit. With Basil currently overjoyed we ordered a few $2 beers off the special and went to look over the brunch menu. Jackalope Jack’s offers plenty of lunch and breakfast options and it was a little hard to decide. I picked the garbage plate and was told by our waitress that is one of the house favorites. Nate had the three meat omelet and both were just what we wanted.

We finished our meal, watched a little college football on their outdoor TVs and sparked up a conversation with a fellow dog owner and his English mastiff, Duke. Overall, our experience was nice and perfect for a early Saturday afternoon. We will definitely be back for dinner and drinks another night and probably for brunch another morning. Check out Jackalope Jack’s if you are in the area and you will not be disappointed.

A case of the Boston Mondays!

We are suffering from a serious case of the Mondays! But if the Mondays are going to be this cute, I think we can handle it!

Meet our new HUGE friend! Duke!

Yesterday we were having lunch and the coolest dog and his owner sat down next to us. Introducing Duke, the 250 LB English mastiff. He is such a sweetie and obviously draws a lot of attention. Basil loved him and wanted play the whole time. So, say hello to Duke!

DIY T-Shirt Dog Toy

Hello all! In our house Basil loves new toys and my husband loves new t-shirts so I came up with a way that I can make both of those things happen much faster. By using an old, stretched out, too large t-shirt of my husbands and a pair of scissors I can make a rope toy, and I can show you how.

What you will need:

1 clean, old T-shirt

Pair of good scissors

Step one: Cut off both sleeves of the T-shirt.

Step two: Cut the seams off both the sleeves

Step three: Cut down the seams on both sides of the body of the T-shirt.

Step four: Cut long, wide strips “hot dog” wise. (One T-shirt can make two or more toys)

Step five: Over lap the ends of 3 to 5 of the strips. (I used only 4 this time but do whatever you are comfortable with braiding!)

Step six: Use one of the seams that you cut of the sleeves to tie and knot the overlapped strips.

Step seven: Braid! Make it as tight as you can for the best toy.

Step eight: Use the 2nd seam from the sleeves to tie off the other end of your braid.

Step nine: To finish the toy off, I hand knotted the middle to add more interest for my boy. I also added a few stitches to the knots on each end to insure that they stayed put!

All that was left was to leave the new toy in the toy bin and wait! It wasn’t long before he found it and brought it to me. We played tug-a-war for a while and I tried to get a good picture of him enjoying my handmade toy but that was much harder than expected!

Let me know if you try this home-made toy and what your dog thinks! Also, don’t forget to send me a photo of your dogs toy bin to be featured in Whats in your toy bin?! The first dog to score a feature will win a special prize!

I Believe in Boston Terrier Healing Powers!

This week our household was hit by the flu, so we are relying heavily on Boston terrier healing powers. The course of treatment is plenty of face licks and serious snuggles.

All kidding a side I do believe that pets can provide comfort and support when you or your family becomes sick. Each time someone isn’t feeling well in my house Willow, our 20 pound cat, does what she thinks is best by laying on your chest and purring at full volume. Basil will just stare at you until you invite him up into your lap. He lays his head on your chest like his is trying to listen to your heart. Doctor Boston is in!

So, if the flu hits you make sure to drink lots of water, get plenty of sleep, and keep your fur babies close. I’m going to get back to that!
